Mental maths classes for children aged 5 to 14
INDIGO is an abacus-based mental maths programme taught by certified partners across the UK. Children learn to calculate quickly in their heads, and along the way build concentration, memory and confidence.
Classes are taught by independent partners who have been trained and certified in the method. Each partner sets their own prices and runs their own timetable.
What children do
Children start with a physical abacus and learn to picture it. Over time they can add, subtract, multiply and divide large numbers without writing anything down.
They move through levels, earning a certificate at each one, and can enter the national and international INDIGO Mental Maths Olympiad.
What parents notice
Matthew started at five and his focus and consistency have soared. He has gone from a young learner to a school TTRS champion, and he is now working at greater depth and preparing confidently for grammar school. Indigo does not just teach children how to calculate. It teaches them to believe in themselves.
Both of my sons started as soon as they turned 5. They learnt to follow instructions independently, and their attention span and memory improved. We particularly enjoy the annual in person Olympiad. My eldest completed all the levels by the time he turned 8.
The programme is engaging and educational, and it is well designed with solid educational principles behind it. I have noticed significant improvements in my son's problem solving and memory. His recent maths report came back with grades above his usual performance.

We run a free community for parents, whether or not your child is in classes yet. It is a place to ask questions about the method, get practice ideas to use at home, see what other children are working on, and hear about the Olympiad and other events.
